Getting ready for the new year
Room assignments released for first-year students
11:57 a.m., July 31, 2015--Complete room assignments have been sent to all incoming first-year University of Delaware students who will be living on campus beginning this fall.
“First-year students will live in one of two campus neighborhoods, with trained, caring staff members,” said Kathleen Kerr, executive director of Residence Life and Housing. “Living on campus provides both a space and the support for students to contribute to their communities and to thrive at the University.”

First-year students are assigned to the East Campus neighborhood and the Laird Campus neighborhood.
Most students received their roommates’ names and contact information and the name of their first-year building or complex earlier this summer.
Students have been actively using their Residence Life and Housing Facebook groups to build community with their roommates and others living in the same location.
Knowing their room numbers, students can now connect with their floor mates and most immediate neighbors. Students also now know which check-in period applies to them on new student move-in day, Aug. 29.
The two-stage release process also afforded numerous opportunities for students and families to connect with Residence Life and Housing over the summer and through New Student Orientation.
“The most powerful part of the first-year experience comes from students getting involved and being a part of a community,” said Kerr.
Assignments were sent to University email addresses. Students who have not activated their University email accounts should visit the Information Technologies website for instructions on how to do so.
To help students and families prepare to move in to the residence halls, Residence Life and Housing regularly updates an online Move In Guide.
The guide includes a checklist of items to bring, information on academic-year rentals and a list of prohibited items, along with details about checking in to the halls and driving directions and parking information for move-in day.
Additionally, room dimensions and building information will be available online for each residence hall, provided by Facilities, Real Estate and Auxiliary Services.
Students considering a room change are invited to learn more about the mutual room exchange option available Aug. 3 to 14 via the My Housing portal.
More about check-In periods for Aug. 29
Check-in times have been established for new student move-in day to help ease traffic congestion and encourage a smoother experience by staggering move-in by floor. New students will move in on Saturday, Aug. 29 on a staggered schedule:
- Odd floors (1, 3, 5): 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.
- Even floors (0, 2, 4): 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Students will know what time they should move in after receiving their room number.
For students and families who are unable to check in during the assigned time, a form to request an exception is available.
It is especially important that students who are not arriving together have a plan for how the room will be set up and how space will be shared.
