Garcia Cintora was selected after watching an online campus fire safety video and entering his name and school information into a sweepstakes. His prize was a pizza party for 50, provided by Domino's, and 50 T-shirts from the CCFS.
At the party, held Nov. 14 in the first floor lounge of Gilbert Residence Hall, Carcia Cintora was presented with a certificate from the CCFS by Kevin McSweeney, fire marshall at UD. The event was a double celebration for Garcia Cintora since it was also his birthday.
In all, three winners were chosen from the more than 100 students who participated from 31 schools nationwide. The contest was created to help raise awareness of campus fires and to encourage students to put safety first. According to NFPA statistics, fires in dormitories, fraternities, sororities and student housing increased 24 percent from 3,350 fires in 2003 to 4,160 fires in 2013.
At UD, fire safety training is conducted for all resident assistants in campus residence halls, and fire drills are routinely held.
