1:29 p.m., Sept. 15, 2014--Jay Dolmage, associate professor at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, will present a talk titled “Disabled Upon Arrival: Technologies of Disablement and Racialization at the Border” at 3:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 22, in 127 Memorial Hall on the University of Delaware campus in Newark.

The talk, which is free and open to the public, is part of the UD Department of English speaker series.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

In his talk, Dolmage will investigate the ways that rhetorics (and connected technologies) of eugenics and immigration restriction opportunistically established new categories and schemes of race and disability at North American borders in the early part of the 20th century.

Dolmage is editor of the Canadian Journal of Disability Studies and author of the book Disability Rhetoric.

A reception will follow in the dome on the third floor of Memorial Hall.
