East Campus honors
Learning By Design magazine cites Gilbert, Redding residence halls
8:46 a.m., Oct. 14, 2014--The Learning By Design education design and innovation excellence magazine has named the University of Delaware’s new East Campus residence halls – the 182-bed Eliphalet W. Gilbert Hall and the 585-bed Louis L. Redding Hall – winners of its 2014 Outstanding Project Award.
The magazine citation noted that the residence halls “create a new residential destination on the east part of campus that supports the University’s first-year experience.”

The buildings reflect the traditional Georgian-style architecture on campus with a contemporary approach, the citation said, adding, “The siting of the two buildings and their relationship to each other creates a community while also accomplishing a high density design that preserves adjacent wetlands and outdoor recreational spaces, minimizes disturbance to neighboring residential and dining facilities, and maintains a clear sense of campus pedestrian circulation.”
The magazine recognized the work of the design team -- ABHA Architects and Michael Deptula, principal in charge; Skanska USA Building, construction manager; Burdette, Koehler, Murphy and Associates, mechanical and electrical engineers; Baker, Ingram and Associates, structural engineers; and Duffield Associates, civil engineers – and UD Facilities Planning and Construction.
“We are pleased that Learning By Design has chosen to honor these two residence halls, which we believe are excellent examples of modern design that serve the needs of our students and also fit well with the historic architecture on our campus,” said Peter Krawchyk, University architect and campus planner.
“The recognition for the University’s partners in the project is very well deserved,” Krawchyk added.
