UD Collegiate Figure Skating Team sets fundraising ice show

12:05 p.m., May 1, 2014--The University of Delaware Collegiate Figure Skating Team (UDFS) is hosting a fundraising spring ice show, “UDare Skate for the Cure,” at 3:30 p.m., Saturday, May 3, at the Fred Rust Ice Arena on South Campus.

The proceeds from this event will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and the UD figure skating team for its 2014-15 competitive season.

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

“UDFS works so hard to find ways to fundraise for ice time, travel expenses, and competition fees but we wanted to find a way to not only help our team but a larger cause,” said UDFS Vice President Clara Sherman. “Our team decided JDRF would be the perfect cause, as it means a tremendous amount to me. I was diagnosed with Type 1 juvenile diabetes when I was two years old. Skating with diabetes definitely has its highs and lows but it has taught me to overcome obstacles on the road to achieving my goals.”

The show will feature UDFS, the 2014 U.S. Figure Skating intercollegiate team champions, in a variety of solo and group numbers.

There will also be several guest skaters featured in the show, Emmanuel Savary, 2009 intermediate men’s champion and Team USA international competitor; Megan Campbell, a young figure skater at UD; and the dance team of Carter Jones and Richard Sharpe, the 2014 British figure skating championships silver medalists.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children under 10 and for students. Raffle tickets will be available for purchase to win a variety of baskets and there will be an open skate with the cast members from 5:30-6:30. Skate rental for this event is $3.
