Osher Lifelong Learning Institute plans open house in Wilmington

3:16 p.m., July 22, 2013--Members of the community are invited to visit and experience the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at an open house on Monday, July 29, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Arsht Hall, 2700 Pennsylvania Ave., Wilmington.

The open house will feature demonstration classes, musical performances, personal tours and refreshments. The “Moo Mobile,” the UDairy Creamery’s ice cream van, will be selling ice cream on site, as well.

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

All open house attendees registering for the first time during open house will be eligible to win free membership for the fall semester.

“There’s a youthfulness of spirit here. It’s real. It’s palpable,” says Susan Flook, one of the more than 260 instructors at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Delaware in Wilmington.

She and her fellow volunteer instructors will be teaching more than 260 courses and activities this fall.

“We’re delighted to welcome 17 new instructors this semester and to offer 67 new courses,” adds Flook, who also serves as co-chair of Osher Wilmington’s Curriculum Committee.

Each semester, the Wilmington program gathers more than 2,100 members who also enjoy such benefits as the UD fitness center, library and course audit privileges. Included are opportunities to attend lectures, musical performances, social activities and cultural excursions. Opportunities for local and international travel are also offered.

“This program is a terrific expression of UD’s commitment to the community, as well as a wonderful opportunity for the community to participate in creating one of the country’s most dynamic learning cooperatives,”  says Jim Broomall, associate provost for Professional and Continuing Studies.

The 2013 fall semester begins Tuesday, Sept. 3, and includes courses such as yoga, t’ai chi, art, music, humanities and eight different languages, as well as a special opportunity for a discount to enroll in piano instruction through the Music School of Delaware.

In-person registration is scheduled for July 23-25 and July 29-31, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Arsht Hall. Registrations are always accepted by mail.
