Housing priority
UD students win with housing priority
4:07 p.m., Feb. 26, 2014--This spring, University of Delaware Residence Life and Housing has unveiled its new housing management portal, My Housing, which means an entirely new structure for priority in choosing housing for the next academic year.
Students who apply for housing by midnight on Friday, Feb. 28, will have priority to return to My Housing in March to self-select their housing for 2014-15.

While students are still guaranteed housing if they apply by May 31, the best options for rooms may not be available.
“Room selection will work much like choosing a seat on an airplane or buying concert tickets,” said Karen DeMonte, associate director, Residence Life and Housing. “Students will see available spaces on campus along with the floor plan of where they want to live and can claim those spaces. They will know immediately where they will be living next year.”
How early a student can log in to select a room is determined by a student’s priority, or for a roommate or “Friends Together” group, the average of the group members’ priorities.
Students who apply by Feb. 28 will get to select first. Specifically, seniors will select first, followed by juniors, then sophomores, and then current freshmen.
Within each of these class groups, students will receive priority based on how many priority points they have earned, then how many cumulative credits they have.
Some students took advantage of an early bird application process this past fall, which gave them five priority points. First-year students who lived in extended housing as of Oct. 1 earned a priority point. Elected officers of National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) and Resident Student Association (RSA) also each earned one point. A few additional priority points were distributed to students who participated in the housing tours in the fall and other opportunities to explore campus housing offered by Residence Life and Housing.
Matt Sobel, a freshman finance major from Stony Brook, N.Y., applied as an early bird after touring upper division residence halls on a bus tour offered by Residence Life and Housing. Sobel and his friends applied early to increase their chances of getting their first choice in housing.
Sobel said, “I’d like to live in the Christiana West Tower, in a room with a great view of campus.”
Sobel wants to continue living on campus and participating in campus leadership. He currently serves as building governor for Eliphalet Gilbert Hall, is his floor’s NET captain and has participated in intramural sports.
Sobel has his eye on the presidency of the Towers Complex Community Council and the executive board of the Resident Student Association.
Sobel will serve as his Friends Together group leader and will select spaces for everyone in his group.
