Principe, Drew Professor of the Humanities and director of the Singleton Center for the Study of Premodern Europe, will consider whether “warfare” has always existed between science and religion.
The idea is pervasive, deeply ingrained and often goes unquestioned, however it is not accepted by serious historians of science.
Principe’s talk will explore the myth’s origins and empty foundations, and why it continues to be perpetuated. He also will consider how religious motivations, individuals and institutions historically have been the primary drivers of scientific exploration and discovery.
