Students will be assessed the cost of the yearly coverage on their student account in two installments (fall/spring). To have the fee waived, students must submit a waiver form by Sept. 10 or they will be automatically enrolled in the UD Health Insurance Plan for Students and responsible for the charges applied to their student account.
Who does this new policy impact?
- Undergraduate students registered for 12 or more credits
- Contracted graduate students
- Non-contracted graduate students registered for 9 or more credits
- Registered international students on F1 or J1 visas
Part-time students not included in the list above are eligible to purchase the Health Insurance Plan for Students on a voluntary basis, which they may do here.
Is this a fee increase?
This change is not an increase in fees. Most domestic students already carry adequate health insurance and will incur no additional charges by simply showing proof of coverage.
The small number of domestic students without insurance or those who wish to use the plan as a supplement to existing insurance coverage will enroll in the UD Health Insurance Plan for Students, a plan administered by University Health Plans, a national insurance carrier that works exclusively with colleges and universities.
The charge will be part of their student bill and the same options available in paying other University charges may be utilized.
Why is this now required?
UD believes student wellness is essential to academic progress and wants to ensure all students have health insurance coverage. This requirement brings the University in line with recommendations by the American College Health Association, the voice of expertise in college health, that all universities require proof of adequate health insurance coverage as a condition of enrollment.
In addition, beginning Jan. 1, 2014, under the federal Affordable Care Act, most Americans will be required by law to obtain basic health insurance coverage or pay a fee.
