UD students prepare to explain research at national biology conference
9:35 a.m., April 10, 2013--For the 14th year, several University of Delaware undergraduates will attend the annual Experimental Biology Meeting and present posters and oral descriptions of their research.
To prepare for this year's conference, to be held April 19-24 in Boston, seven students displayed and explained their posters last week in McKinly Laboratory, where faculty members and others learned about the research and offered suggestions for the presentations.

As part of the conference each year, the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) sponsors an undergraduate poster competition. Since 2001, students from UD's Howard Hughes Medical Institute's (HHMI) Undergraduate Science Education Program have won more awards at the competition than students from any other institution, said Hal White, professor of chemistry and biochemistry and director of the HHMI program at the University.
"I attribute this success in part to the feedback students get at the practice poster session" on campus, White said.
At last year's conference in San Diego, more than 200 students from across the United States competed in four categories, with each category awarding one first-place and four honorable mention awards. UD students received four of those 20 awards.
Four faculty members and nine students will attend this year's conference in Boston. The seven undergraduates presenting posters work with faculty members in the departments of biological sciences, chemistry and biochemistry, chemical and biomolecular engineering and plant and soil sciences.
