IT reports that new phishing scam targets UD students
11:38 a.m., Sept. 23, 2011--A new phishing scam hit University of Delaware email inboxes this morning, according to University IT. Specifically tailored to UD students with PNC Bank accounts, this scam claims that the recipients need to click a link in the message to confirm their account information.
“Like all email that asks you to confirm your account information, this is a blatant attempt to get students to reveal personal information to a malicious person,” said Karl Hassler, associate director, IT Network and Systems Services (IT-NSS). He added that IT’s advice is simple: “Delete the message. Do not click the link.”

“Since a lot of UD students and staff are PNC customers, it’s important that the University community recognize this is not a legitimate email message,” said Tabitha Groh, communications specialist, Facilities and Auxiliary Services.
She added that the University and PNC Bank have communicated about two different phishing scams this year. “PNC and UD both want to be sure that all our students know about the dangers of identity theft.”
