UD freshman dies in accident

Services announced for Nicole Marzano who died Oct. 30

4:08 p.m., Nov. 2, 2011--Nicole Marzano, who was a freshman accounting major at UD, died in a car accident on Sunday evening, Oct. 30, while returning from a women’s soccer club game at Drexel University. 

Born in New Brunswick, N.J., Nicole lived in Clark, N.J., for 17 years.  She was the salutatorian of the 2011 graduating class of Arthur L. Johnson High School in Clark where she was a member of the National Honor Society, the Tri-M Music Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society, which she served as president in her senior year.  Nicole was a four-year varsity member of the track and soccer teams and played basketball for two years.  She was captain of the soccer team in her senior year, and was also a peer leader, peer mediator, and a member of the Key Club for four years.

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

“The University community is deeply saddened by the loss of one of its own. We extend our deepest condolences to Ms. Marzano’s family and friends and to the many new friends she made during her brief time here on our campus,” said Dawn Thompson, dean of students and associate vice president for student life.

For students who would like assistance coping with Ms. Marzano’s death, counseling services are available at UD’s Center for Counseling and Student Development.  Students may visit the center located in 261 Perkins Student Center or call 302-831-2141. Students seeking more general assistance may visit the Office of the Dean of Students, located in 101 Hullihen Hall or call 302-831-8939.

A funeral mass for Ms. Marzano will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 5, at St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church, 1600 Rahway Avenue, Westfield, N.J.; and visiting hours will be held at the church from 4-8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 4. Online condolences may be left at the Walter J. Johnson funeral home website.  

Bus transportation will be offered to UD students who wish to attend the visitation on Friday, Nov. 4. A bus will depart the Trabant University Center at 2 p.m., Friday, and students should arrive no later than 1:45 p.m. Students are asked to make a reservation by calling the Office of the Dean of Students at 302-831-8939.
