“The annual award was established to encourage and honor exemplary performance by a graduate student in the role of a teaching assistant,” Nowak said. “All graduate teaching assistants are valued teaching colleagues in our department and have important roles in carrying out its educational mission.”

The award recipients were selected based on student evaluations and letters of support from course instructors.

Grugan was nominated for serving as a teaching assistant in astronomy laboratories during the spring and fall 2011 semesters and in Introductory Physics I and II discussions during Winter and Summer 2011 sessions. He received a master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh and was an adjunct faculty member at Delaware County Community College before coming to UD.  He is pursuing a doctorate with Prof. Barry Walker.
