Feb. 1: Winter indie films

New York filmmaker to attend 'The Swell Season' screening


1:10 p.m., Jan. 23, 2012--The eighth annual Winter Independent Film Series at the University of Delaware will conclude Wednesday, Feb. 1, with a showing of The Swell Season and a visit by co-director Nick August-Perna.

Sponsored by University Student Centers, the series is free and open to the public. The Swell Season will be shown at 7:30 p.m. in the Trabant University Center Theatre. Seating is limited, and tickets will not be available in advance.

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

The Swell Season is a feature-length documentary about Academy Award-winning musicians Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova.

August-Perna will introduce the film and participate in a question-and-answer session following the screening.

August-Perna is a New York-based filmmaker working with Elkcreek Cinema. In addition to his work on The Swell Season, which he co-directed and edited, he has worked for the award-winning PBS documentary series Wide Angle, and recently traveled to Haiti to film a story for Human Rights Watch. He has also written and directed several short films and documentaries. 

August-Perna received a master's degree at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in 2007.

Prior to The Swell Season showing, the Winter Independent Film Series will continue Wednesday, Jan. 25, with Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest. The film is directed by Michael Rapaport and provides a glimpse behind the scenes of A Tribe Called Quest, an innovative group that has influenced modern hip hop music for more than three decades. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. in the Trabant University Center Theatre.
