New Music Delaware to feature vocal, chamber works

8:50 a.m., Feb. 21, 2012--New Music Delaware will present a selection of vocal and chamber works by New York-based composer Nkeiru Okoye and Texas-based composer Peter Fischer at 8 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 25, in the Gore Recital Hall of the Roselle Center for the Arts on the University of Delaware campus in Newark.

UD faculty performers include Noël Archambeault, soprano, and Julie Nishimura, piano, as well as retired faculty member Marie Robinson, soprano.

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

Tickets cost $12 for adults, $8 for senior adults and $3 for students and will be available at the door the evening of the performance.

Okoye has had her music performed on four continents, and has a penchant for infusing popular and non-Western influences in a classical framework. She studied at Oberlin Conservatory of Music and Rutgers University.

Fischer is associate professor of music at Texas Tech University, where he teaches theory and composition. His works have been performed nationally and internationally.  He was named the grand prize winner of the 2008 International Society of Bassists, Solo Division, for his Sonata for Contrabass and Piano.

Archambeault teaches applied voice, vocal pedagogy and lyric diction at UD. She holds a bachelor of music degree in vocal performance from the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, a master of music degree in vocal performance and pedagogy from Westminster Choir College of Rider University and a doctor of musical arts degree in vocal performance from Texas Tech University.

Nishimura has been the faculty accompanist for UD's Department of Music for 23 years. She has performed more than 380 collaborative recitals and 45 opera and scene-study performances with the Opera Workshop and Opera Theatre.

Robinson served on the boards of OperaDelaware, Delaware Classical Showcase, Delaware Valley Chorale, the Newark Symphony Orchestra and the National Opera Association. She is a retired associate professor of voice and opera at UD.
