Unsung Hero

The One Love Foundation has announced that University of Delaware men's lacrosse standout Elijah Conte has been selected as a winner of the 2016 YRL Unsung Hero Award.

Baylor University leads the poll at 25-0 and is followed in the top 10 by the University of Connecticut (23-2), Stanford University (22-1), the University of Notre Dame (24-2), Duke University (21-3), the University of Miami (Fla.) (22-3), the University of Kentucky (21-3), the University of Maryland (21-4, and the only team to defeat the Hens), Ohio State and UD.

UD junior All American Elena Delle Donne leads the nation in scoring with 28.2 points per game.

UD improved to 22-1 and 13-0 atop the Colonial Athletic Association with a 94-56 victory over Georgia State University on Sunday in Atlanta. The victory gave UD head coach Tina Martin her 300th career victory.

“We’ve got great team chemistry and we’re a team through and through," said Martin, who has led the Hens to two NCAA Tournament appearances and six Women's NIT Tournament appearances during her tenure.

"It’s been a lot of work by a lot of people," she added. "A team is not just one person and a program is not just one coach. It means so much to get that number, but like anything else in sports, you move on. You can smile about it, but records and numbers fall. This is a great group of kids. I’m blessed to be in this position where I can hopefully be a positive influence on these young people and have a great staff.”

The Hens have five games left -- all CAA contests -- in the regular season. They will travel to Hofstra University on Thursday, Feb. 16, and to Drexel University on Sunday, Feb. 19.

They will then return home for games at the Bob Carpenter Center against George Mason University at 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 23, and against Northeastern University at 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 26.

They will close the regular season on the road against the College of William and Mary on Wednesday, Feb. 29.

The CAA tournament will be held March 8-11 at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md.
