9:17 a.m., Sept. 8, 2010----Laurence Seidman, Chaplin Tyler Professor of Economics in the University of Delaware's Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics, was recently featured on C-SPAN's Washington Journal program, where he shared his ideas about how to lower future federal deficits while still stimulating the economy today.
Washington Journal is C-SPAN's morning interview call-in program that airs live daily, 365 days a year. Through the call-in program, C-SPAN encourages viewer interactivity by enabling viewers and listeners to talk directly to elected officials, policymakers and journalists covering the national policy debate.
Seidman also published an article on the same topic, entitled “Reducing Future Deficits While Stimulating Today's Economy.” He argues that legislators should enact a budget that maintains balance under normal unemployment levels, and a fiscal stimulus package with a clause that phases out the package as the economy returns to full employment.
Seidman's 45-minute discussion may be viewed online at the C-SPAN Washington Journal website.
Earlier this summer, Seidman was also featured in The New York Times economics blog, Economix, where he offered a threefold solution to fixing flaws in the current federal budget policy.
Seidman's full argument may be viewed on the Economix blog.
Seidman received his bachelor's degree in social studies from Harvard University and his doctorate in economics from the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to joining the UD faculty in 1982, he taught economics at the University of Pennsylvania and Swarthmore College.
He is the author of a number of books, including Public Finance (McGraw-Hill, 2009), Pouring Liberal Wine into Conservative Bottles: Strategy and Policies (University Press of America, 2006), and Economic Parables and Policies: An Introduction to Economics (M.E. Sharpe, 2004).
