1:26 p.m., Oct. 8, 2010----With dairy production a vital part of today's agricultural industry, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack appointed 12 new members to the National Dairy Promotion and Research Board (NDB) earlier this year to strengthen the position of dairy in the marketplace.

Among those appointees is UD alumna Susan Troyer, who graduated in 1988 with a bachelor's degree in animal science.

As a member of the NDB, Troyer represents the farmers of Michigan, Indiana and Ohio. She is responsible for collecting and allocating funds for the National Dairy checkoff program.

Additionally, Troyer works with the United Dairy Industry Association through Dairy Management Inc. to increase dairy sales and consumption by promoting dairy products to the general public.

A resident of Goshen, Ind., Troyer has been a self-employer dairy farmer for more than 15 years. On the farm, Troyer and her two children, Crist and Anne, show off their herd of Holstein cows and other farm animals to nearby elementary schoolchildren.

Troyer is a member of the Michigan Milk Producers Association, where her dairy's milk is sold. This cooperative is based out of Novi, Mich., and serves approximately 2,300 dairy farmers in a portion of the Great Lakes region.

In 2008, USDA statistics reported that 190 billion pounds of milk were produced in the United States. As an essential industry, the NDB's goal is to maintain and expand domestic and foreign markets and uses for dairy and dairy products.

This mandatory program is funded by dairy producers at the rate of 15 cents per hundredweight of milk produced in the 48 contiguous States and marketed commercially. USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service has oversight of the board.

The 36-member board is authorized by the Dairy Production Stabilization Act of 1983. Appointees are selected based on nominations submitted by eligible producer organizations, general farm organizations, and qualified state or regional dairy products promotion, research or nutrition education programs.

Troyer's past appointments include the National Young Cooperators Council, Elkhart County Farm Bureau, Elkhart County Agricultural Society, and the Indiana Dairy Industry Development Board.
