Art student only one of 15 students nationwide to earn Joan Mitchell MFA grant

9:14 a.m., May 18, 2011--Dan Jackson, a graduating master of fine arts degree student in the University of Delaware Department of Art, has been selected to receive a highly competitive annual grant from the Joan Mitchell Foundation.

From an invited nomination process of 125 nominees, only 15 graduating painters nationwide receive the MFA Grant.

Warren Award

Rosalind Johnson, assistant dean for student success in the NUCLEUS Program in UD's College of Arts and Sciences, was presented the John Warren Excellence in Leadership and Service Award during a May 26 ceremony.

“Not only is this a feather in the cap of the art department to have been invited to nominate someone, but it is a tremendous achievement for our student to win,” says Joann Browning, associate dean for the arts.  

Jackson’s work is currently on display at UD@Crane in Philadelphia, where it will remain until June 12, alongside other 2011 MFA thesis exhibitions. 

The MFA Grant was established by the Joan Mitchell Foundation in 1997 “to help MFA painters and sculptors in furthering their artistic careers and to aid in the transition form academic to professional studio work upon graduation.” They are given in recognition of artistic quality to artists chosen from a body of candidates put forth by nominators from the academic art community across the United States.
