
W.D. Snodgrass Symposium
Event will honor memory of Pulitzer-winning member of UD's faculty
9:47 a.m., March 25, 2011----The University of Delaware Department of English has announced the W.D. Snodgrass Symposium, an event that will be held in memory of the late University faculty member who was the winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1960.
The symposium is scheduled from 2-4 p.m., Wednesday, April 27, at the Roselle Center for the Arts on the UD campus in Newark.
Prof. Snodgrass was born in Wilkinsburg, Pa., in 1926. He was educated at Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pa., and the University of Iowa. At Iowa he studied with the poet Robert Lowell and became one of the early practitioners of “confessional” poetry.

He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1960 for his work, Heart's Needle.
Prof. Snodgrass received numerous grants and fellowships and taught at Cornell University, the University of Rochester, Wayne State University and Syracuse University. From 1980 to 1994 he was Distinguished Professor of creative writing and contemporary literature at the University of Delaware.
The symposium will feature poet X.J. Kennedy, New Yorker essayist and author Adam Gopnik (Paris to the Moon) as well as poet and UD Professor Emeritus of English Gibbons Ruark (Passing Through Customs).
There will be a reception to follow, lasting until 5:30 p.m.
