Employees will have the opportunity to choose from one of three weekly mileage goals and keep track of their miles walked.
It is well established that sedentary lifestyles contribute to stress in the workplace and increase risks for chronic diseases. Recent research demonstrates that regular exercisers who have sedentary jobs may not be active enough.
“On a campus as walkable as UD's, employees are just steps away from being able to weave more physical activity into their day,” says Linda Smith, HealthyU program coordinator. “Our goal in offering this program at the worksite is to get people moving more and help them reap the benefits of a healthier lifestyle.”
Everyone who registers will receive a neoprene armband media holder for cell phone or media player and an ID. For participants who run and are looking to improve performance and/or race times, a six-week running clinic is included in this program at no extra charge.
One lucky finisher of the walking program will receive the randomly drawn grand prize, which is a free weekend stay at UD's Virden Center at the Hugh R. Sharp Campus in Lewes, donated by Conference Services.
