Library exhibits Neil Simon scripts

10:12 a.m., April 28, 2011--An exhibition of Neil Simon's typescripts for the play The Good Doctor will be on display from Monday, May 2, through Sunday, May 15, in the Information Room of the first floor of the University of Delaware Library.

The exhibition, "Neil Simon's The Good Doctor Typescripts," is being presented in conjunction with the Resident Ensemble Players' current production of The Good Doctor at the Roselle Center for the Arts.

Upon reading a collection of short stories written by playwright Anton Chekhov, Simon was inspired to adapt the stories into a play. Chekhov wrote short stories for local newspapers as a source of income while putting himself through medical school and Simon’s childhood nickname was "Doc," hence the title The Good Doctor. The exhibition features three versions of the script: a first draft, a final draft of the Broadway show and the finished screenplay. The various versions on display demonstrate the writing process; changes to the script are evident even on the first page.  

“Neil Simon’s The Good Doctor Typescripts” is curated, designed and installed by Laurie Rizzo, assistant librarian, with assistance from Anita Wellner, library assistant, on exhibition preparation. They are both from the Special Collections Department of the University of Delaware Library.

Holdings of the Special Collections Department of the University of Delaware Library include books, manuscripts, maps, prints, photographs, broadsides, periodicals, pamphlets, ephemera and realia from the fifteenth to the twenty-first century. The collections complement the library's general collections with particular strengths in the subject areas of the arts; English, Irish and American literature; history and Delawareana; horticulture; and history of science and technology.
