1:23 p.m., Dec. 1, 2009----Ken Lomax, University of Delaware professor emeritus of bioresources engineering, was presented a lifetime honorary membership in the American Mushroom Institute (AMI) during the organization's 51st annual conference.
The honor was presented by Donna Silvestri Fecondo, chairperson of the AMI board.
The AMI does not distribute many awards and the honor bestowed upon Lomax has only been given to 14 other individuals.
Lomas is the author of 29 articles in the Mushroom News and at least 100 presentations at AMI short courses, seminars and pesticide credit classes.
Fecondo said, “If it has to do with air flows and temperatures in a mushroom house, he is your go-to guy. By taking research based engineering and mixing it with common sense practicality, he has shown growers how to be more efficient, more productive and more profitable. The Best Practices for Environmental Protection for the Mushroom Farm Community would never have been completed, nor will it ever be revised, without his leadership.”
Lomax said, “For the 30 years that I worked on mushroom related projects, the Department of Bioresources Engineering and the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources provided significant support for my efforts. I think that this American Mushroom Institute personal honor is also recognition for many years of University of Delaware involvement with the Kennett Square/Hockessin mushroom farming community.”
Also a UD alum, having received a master's degree in entomology and applied ecology in 1971, Lomax retired from UD in 2009.
