AERA established the fellows program to recognize outstanding accomplishments in education research.

“It is always satisfying to have one's work valued by one's peers in the field,” Murray said. “I was pleased to be included in this inaugural group. I fully expect others at our university to join me in time.”

Murray's involvement with AERA began when he was a graduate student at Johns Hopkins University, more than 40 years ago. At various times he served as editor for two AERA journals. He also regularly presents his research at the organization's annual meetings.

Fellows are education researchers, like Murray, with substantial research accomplishments. AERA established the program to emphasize the importance of sustained research contributions in the field to new scholars.

Research is something Murray stresses not only for students, but also as an education for policymakers.

“Nearly everything in education would be improved if policymakers attended to established research findings,” he said.

Murray joins approximately 300 other professionals as an inaugural fellow. The official induction will take place at AERA's annual meeting in April in San Diego.
