"The University of Delaware's first President's Lecture is on entrepreneurship," said UD President Patrick Harker. "I am proud to highlight an individual whose innovation and risk-taking has contributed to the nation's ability to succeed in an ever-changing and global marketplace."

Cawley began his financial services career in 1963 and founded MBNA in 1982. He retired as chairman and chief executive officer of MBNA at the end of 2003.

A graduate of Georgetown University, Cawley has served on the boards of the Grand Opera House in Wilmington, Del., St. Benedict's Preparatory School in Newark, N.J., the George Bush Presidential Library Foundation, the American Quality Foundation and the Metropolitan Wilmington Urban League.

Cawley also serves on the board of directors for the Camden Public Library and the Owls Head Transportation Museum, both in Maine, and the Wyeth Foundation for American Art. He is chairperson of the Starfire Fund, which provides scholarships for inner city boys and girls to attend high school and college.
