The program Sun Studio is available on Strauss.
Please see the Sun distribution page at http://developers.sun.com/prodtech/cc/products/ for information and instructions for downloading a free copy of Sun Studio for Solaris x86 and some versions of Linux.
Connect to Strauss from any X11 Windows System (e.g., a
Sun Ray terminal, or
a PC with Exceed)
At the UNIX prompt (%
), type
sunstudio
The first time you do this, you should get the Sun Studio Welcome screen
Click on Setup
Wizard
(lower-right corner of the Welcome
tab window)
to configure the IDE:
Choose Web Browser: Swing HTML Browser
, and
click Next >
.
The built-in Editor
is best for new users. If you are an expert in using
emacs or vi you may choose Xemacs
or GVim
.
Click Next
>
Enable
the Java module by setting the value in the Java row to
True
. All the other modules are enabled by default.
Click Finish.

Common troubleshooting questions
command not found
message when I type "sunstudio"?
Sun Studio is only installed on Strauss. You are probably on
copland
or one of the Sun Ray servers such as vivaldi
.
Connect to Strauss, and type
sunstudio
Can't connect to X11 windows server
message
when I type "sunstudio"?
You must be using an X11 server, and you should connect to Strauss using
ssh with X11 tunneling. On the Sun Ray terminals,
connect to Strauss using the Application pull down menu. For example,
select Application > Internet > 1 xterm on Strauss
. Then type
sunstudio
Cannot convert string
"-monotyp-arial ..."
mean?
It means the
monotype-arial
font is not
available.
To make this font available, can add the Strauss
X font server to your font path with the command:
xset fp+ tcp/strauss.udel.edu:7100
Welcome to Sun studio
window?
Sun Studio stores your current state in your $HOME/.sunstudio
directory.
When you start Sun Studio, the windows are opened as they appeared when you
last quit.
You can get the welcome
tab window again from
the Help
pull-down menu.
Sun Studio 11 is a new version. We suggest you back up all your
important projects and remove the hidden $HOME/.sunstudio
directory. Start Sun Studio and configure the IDE with the
Setup Wizard
.
You can import your old projects into
the new version.
We suggest that new users try the "Getting Started Tutorial" from Sun Studio's on-line help.
