How to Connect Your Windows 95 Computer to the UD Network Through a Modem

To connect your Windows 95 computer to the UD network through a modem, you will need to do the following:

Setting Up PPP with Windows 95

Note: Have your original Windows 95 CD or disks handy before you add software because the computer may ask you to insert the CD or disks.

  1. Modem Setup
  2. Make sure your modem is set up and working properly. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.

  3. Dial-Up Networking
  4. Double-click the "My Computer" icon. If you see a folder named "Dial-Up Networking," go to step 3.

If you do not have a "Dial-Up Networking" folder, you will need to install "Dial-Up Networking:"

    1. Double-click the Control Panel folder and click "Add/Remove Programs." (Or you can access the Control Panel under "Settings" in the "Start" menu.)
    2. Click the "Windows Setup" tab.
    3. Click "Communications."
    4. Click "Details"; then, click the small box next to "Dial-Up Networking." A checkmark should appear in the box.
    5. Click "OK."
    6. Click "OK" again.
    7. Restart your computer after the installation is complete.
    8. Check the "My Computer" screen--you should now see a "Dial-Up Networking" folder.

    8. Be sure only "Dial-Up Adapter" remains (unless you also have a network card installed--see section 4G below.)
  1. TCP/IP Protocol
    1. In the "Network" window, click "Add."
    2. In the "Select Network Component Type" box, click "Protocol."

A Note About Call Waiting

If you have call waiting, you must turn off the call waiting feature while you are using the computer. Follow the steps below to set up the connection.

  1. Click the "My Computer" icon and click the "Dial-Up Networking" folder.
  2. In the "Dial-Up Networking" folder, you will see the "University of Delaware" icon.
  3. Double-click the icon.
  4. Click the "Dial-Properties" button.
  5. Select "This location has call waiting."
  6. In the box at the end of the line, "To disable it, dial:", type
  7. *70, (be sure to type the comma after *70)

  8. Click "OK."
  9. Click on the "X" in the upper right-hand corner of the "Properties" box to close it.

Using PPP with Windows 95

  1. In the "Dial-Up Networking" folder, you will see the "University of Delaware" icon. Make sure that you use this icon rather than any other dialer to connect to the University.
  2. Double-click the icon.
  3. You will see a "Username" prompt box. Type your UNIX username or user number in the "User Name" box.
  4. Note: Be sure to type your username in lowercase letters. The default is uppercase letters.

  1. Type your UNIX password in the "Password" box.
  2. Click "Connect" to dial. A message will appear that says you’re connected.

Note: Nothing more will happen until you choose a program like telnet to connect to copland to use e-mail or a news reader. One of the buttons on the "Connected to U of D" window is a "Disconnect" button. Be sure to click it to disconnect after you are done working.

If you don’t disconnect, your telephone line will still be connected to the University, and you won’t receive any incoming phone calls.

Using telnet to Connect to the Central E-mail Server

  2. Type
  3. telnet copland

  4. At the "login" prompt, type your UNIX username.
  5. At the "password" prompt, type your UNIX password.
