Each student will create a short web page and publish it on the web space for this class. The purpose of this project is threefold:
Your page should be an aid for students to research a particular topic on the Internet. You should include a brief introduction indicating the purpose of the page and the intended audience. There should be several places for students to visit and you r page should indicate why a visit to each site would be useful.
When your page is ready, you'll FTP it to its proper location on the UD Unix system. The correct place for your page is on Copland in the directory /www/htdocs/educ/edst667/xxx, where xxx is your last name. The process for FTPing a file will be reviewed in class.
After logging onto Copland, you get to this directory by typing the following command:
You should be aware that the default protection for the files you place here is that anyone in the world can read and write and delete those files. You will probably want to change the protection settings for each file after you transfer it to the web. You do this by issuing chmod commands from the Unix prompt when you are logged on to copland.udel.edu. In the chmod command listed below, replace xxx with the name of your directory, and replace yyy with the filename you want to chmod. To change a file so it is read-only to everyone in the world and read/write accessible by you, type the following command:
Warning: Because of the way your directories are set up in /www/htdocs/educ/edst667, it is possible for you to enter your fellow classmates' directories and edit or delete their files. Please be careful not to enter any else's directory besides your own. You could make yourself real unpopular with your fellow classmates if you harm one of their files. Nevertheless, even the best intentioned people sometimes make mistakes, so make sure you keep backup copies of your files on your PC or on diskettes just in case an accident happens.
The URL for your page will be
