Virgin Islands - Hosoi Ichiba, Japanese Furniture, Gardens & Lifestyle
http://slurl.com/secondlife/Virgin%20Island/91/176/31
"The word "Ichiba" is Japanese for an old-style market. Ours is around a garden we have dedicated to true spirit, peace and tranquility."
While this is actually a set of four shopping islands, it is a beautifully rendered landscape. There is much to explore here. The walled city holds most of the shopping but the note says everything here is for sale. The surrounding areas are set up in various themes. This is a very immersive landscape--one you want to hang out in, take your time and visit each area as they are a feast for the eyes. Practice your camera skills and take lots of photos. This is an example of a sim that could easily be be the inspiration for an educational build.
Naturum Island - Naturum Island Resort
http://slurl.com/secondlife/Naturum%20Island/53/223/33

Second Life residents, come to Brooklyn is Watching and do something or leave something there for us. Then email watchable@brooklyniswatching.com to send links to images (or videos) of whatever you’ve done in front of the tower.
This blog will chronicle whatever happens and the podcast will feature our panel discussing whatever is most fun to argue about. More detailed description for “What is Brooklyn is Watching" is available at their web site:

"Primtings Museum is a sim-sized art gallery dedicated to primmed paintings - a.k.a. primtings. Its goal is inspired by the famous William Saroyan quote, "The role of art is to make a world which can be inhabited."
"A primting is an interactive exploration of a famous piece of RL art brought to life in the form of 3D prims. This can take on various different forms, such as a 3D recreation or extension of a famous RL artwork or... In its most awesome extent, you can walk into it"
The artworks are spread out in a very large building so be sure to look at the map so you don't miss anything. Go have a look at what can be done with a prim and a texture.

Dante's Inferno & Linden Hills
http://slurl.com/secondlife/Dante's%20Inferno/224/5/58
This illustrates the journey through Hell by descending through all nine circles to reach Satan, trapped in the center. Also, Gloria Naylor's African-American novel, Linden Hills, is there once you move to the other side. The Inferno and the novel celebrate the results of life choices. Linden Hills focuses on the choices of modern blacks in their quest to reach "equality" and urges that "equality" is in the heart and not the pocketbook. Likewise, Dante's tour illustrates that life is a series of choices about virtue.
This is part of the Literature Alive! project and is used for teaching regularly. You must have you audio and video set up for the complete experience as well as reading the notecards.

IslamOnline.net
http://slurl.com/secondlife/IslamOnline%20dot%20Net/48/61/22
IslamOnline.net has created two sims intended to promote a greater understanding of the culture and history of Islam. The wider mission of IslamOnline.net is "To create a unique, global Islamic web portal that provides services to Muslims and non-Muslims in several languages. To become a reference for everything that deals with Islam, its sciences, civilization and nation. To have credibility in content, distinction in design, and a sharp and balanced vision of humanity and current events."
The first sim takes you on the route of the Hajj with lots of notecards (and arrows to follow) that guide you through the process of the pilgrimage in a number of languages. The second sim houses a SL Palestinian Holocaust Memorial Museum (SL-PHMM) whose mission is "to prevent the crime of silence. By telling the stories of victimized Palestinian children, we are saying "no" to any form of Holocaust. We believe that it's an obligation to remember and honor the innocents". In addition to the museum, there is a large building that houses classrooms.
While the Hajj build is a bit rough, it is an interesting outreach tool to help enlighten the SL residents about, what can be to some, a very mysterious religious event.

For Halloween
Be aware that some of these sims have damage enabled. The same things that could kill your human in RL, will "kill" your avatar in SL. Watch for your heart icon to appear in the menu. If the heart icon appears. then you are in a damage-enabled sim. If you see your heart icon is broken and find yourself suddenly sent to another location, then your avi has been "killed." But the good news is, you can go back and try it again! Remember your avatar can not really be killed in SL. Only ending your account will do that.
