For the final exam: There are two levels to be mastered. The big picture in the second half of the semester is the nature of the stimulus for beauty. What were Berlyne's ideas? Martindale's? How important (influential, basic, etc) is the typical and how important is the novel ? If both contribute something, how do they interact ? How might differences in expertise contribute to an interaction ? How do ideas like "categorical perception", "connectionism" and "mental representation" enter into the mix ? Finally, do studies of personality and creativity contribute anything ? The narrower level of concern features the specific research questions addressed in the various readings. What is the evidence that prototypicality influences aesthetic judgments ? What are the criticisms of this work ? What is the evidence that an increase in arousal is important ? Any criticisms here ? How is 3-D illusionism produced ? How does mental representation influence what we see (and perhaps) what we like in painting ? Does art have survival value ? What do we know about the development of artistic activity, e.g., drawing ? What is creativity ? Any important personality differences ? There are some meaty essay topics here. Since we have two hours, this exam will be a little longer than the midterm, but the structure (long and short essays) will be the same. You should be ready to answer some aspect of the "big picture" problem, as well as some of the more specific material.
