There is nothing like good advice from a friend, and nothing more helpful during a transition than support from your peers. Mentoring is among the most powerful ways to make a difference. The newest class of international Blue Hens are arriving soon! We need your help to make them feel welcomed and included in our community. The OISS iBuddy program will pair groups of incoming international students with iBuddy mentors who can connect them with the knowledge and resources to navigate life in the US. OISS is looking for students, international and domestic, to serve as mentors.
Who makes a good Blue Hen iBuddy?
The ideal mentor should be sensitive to the needs of the international population, with a willingness to assist students in their transition to their new academic, cultural, social settings. iBuddy mentors must also have utmost awareness and compassion across cultures when connecting and networking with mentees during their adjustment to life in the US. Applicants must be in good academic standing (3.0 or above) and demonstrate effective communication skills and intercultural awareness.
What does a Blue Hen iBuddy do?
Establish email communication with the assigned mentees two weeks prior to the start of the semester. Address any questions about campus life and provide general support prior their arrival to the US.
Assist during the International Student Orientation week. Encourage new students to participate in all orientation week activities. Co-lead campus tours and connect students with other campus resources and programs.
Year-long peer mentoring (from August – April). Stay connected with the mentees throughout the semester. Send weekly updates to maintain open channels of communication, to answer questions, and to inform them of upcoming events and activities.
Support the formation of an iBuddy student organization.
