Dear UD Community:

As we carry out our educational mission here at UD, we work to protect our campus principles of freedom of expression and peaceful assembly without fear of shame or retribution. Currently, college campuses across the country have become overtaken by tension and unrest; many are no longer recognizable as places of learning and peace. Commencement ceremonies have been canceled; students have been expelled; buildings have been destroyed.

With that said, we want to take a moment to acknowledge with pride that our UD community has embraced the value of free expression on our campus, hosting peaceful gatherings, using our voices to have difficult conversations, share perspectives and invite diverse and productive exchange of ideas without discrimination. This is civil discourse in action.

At the same time, we are committed to the safety and wellbeing of all members of our campus community; any unrest, lawlessness and violence on the University of Delaware’s campus will not be tolerated. Those who violate the University’s Student Code of Conduct, University rules and policies, and/or local, state and federal laws, will face consequences. Discriminatory and/or harassing activity, violence, property damage and any conduct that disrupts institutional operations and the rights of students to learn and utilize our campus in the way it is intended may lead to disciplinary actions including suspension or expulsion from the University. Individuals who engage in unauthorized activities that violate the law and/or University policy, such as setting up tents or encampments on University property, may be subject to arrest.

Thank you to everyone for your role in maintaining a campus culture that affirms our shared institutional values and continues to endorse and practice civility and mutual respect in interactions with fellow members of our UD community.

Sincerely,

Dennis Assanis
President
