Dear UD Community,

The past few days have left me — and all of us — shocked and deeply disturbed by the horrific attack by Hamas on Israel and the subsequent, escalating violence occurring in Gaza and Israel. On behalf of the University of Delaware, I want to express that our thoughts and our hearts are with the innocent victims, some of whom are family members and friends of those in our community. We join our voice with others around the world who are advocating for a peaceful end to the suffering and tragic loss of life.

It is important to me that all members of the UD community know they are supported, whether they are directly or indirectly affected by the war. Several student groups have already gathered on campus to connect with and comfort one another. Also, the Division of Student Life has been working with multiple student organizations to create space for reflection and dialogue, and the Center for Global Programs and Services has contacted scholars from affected regions to provide assistance and other resources. In addition, we have confirmed that no UD students, faculty or staff members are participating in University-affiliated programs in these regions at this time. We will continue to find ways for the UD community to come together for education and discussion opportunities.

News and images of war or other traumatic events can make us anxious and affect our daily lives. Please know that the University has resources to help, and this information is available below.

I encourage you to remember that, as part of a strong and compassionate community, we all come from different places and diverse perspectives, and we must support one another during such times of fear and unrest in the world.

Sincerely,

Dennis Assanis
President
