Date of Construction: 1996-1997
Architect/Designer: The Stubbins Associates, Inc.
Current Function: College of Business and Economics
MBNA America Hall, a facility serving the College of Business and Economics, stands on the northwest corner of Amstel Avenue and Orchard Road. A skyway connects the building to the rest of the College in Purnell Hall. The main entry of MBNA America Hall opens onto the street corner and is accented by a curved portico with flanking false chimneys. On the first floor, rows of rounded-arch windows with molded hoods reflect the architect's interest in Italian Renaissance architecture. The second floor has small, square, punched windows while the third floor is lighted by a nearly continuous, horizontal band of multi-pane windows. A three-story, glass-walled atrium with skylights is the highlight of the interior. Other spaces include offices, classrooms, conference rooms and a lounge. The MBNA company, a major financial services corporation based in Delaware, provided a substantial portion of the funding for the building.
