Compromised UDelNet Accounts

What should I do if I cannot log in to email, UDSIS, or Sakai@UD?

In order to protect the University's ability to send and receive email, we sometimes have to disable UDelNet accounts that have been compromised by malware (usually spambot or command-and-control software) that got onto your computer or Internet-connected device via email, downloaded software or media files, or visits to unsafe Web sites.

Hijacked UDelNet accounts are often used by malicious individuals to send out large amounts of spam and phishing email messages. These undesirable messages are recorded as spam by the receiving organizations, which, as a result, will sometimes block all email to and from udel.edu addresses.

Since these hijacked UDelNet accounts' activity can affect the entire University, we sometimes have to disable those accounts until the rightful owner has taken corrective action.

If you are unable to log in to a UD service with your UDelNet ID and UDelNet password, contact the IT Support Center (ITSC) for assistance. You can use the ITSC Help Request Form or call (302) 831-6000.

Restoring your account during winter break

The IT Support Center will be closed for winter break from Saturday, December 22, 2012 through Tuesday, January 1, 2013. It will reopen on Wednesday, January 2, 2013.

If you experience login issues during the UD winter break, go to the UD Network page to reset your UDelNet ID's password.

  1. Since your UDelNet ID has been compromised, you'll need to log in on the right side of the page using your UD ID (also known as your EmplID or student number) and PIN.
  2. In the Maintaining Your UDelNet Account section, select Change your password (UDelNet, UDSIS, Mirapoint, CAS, Sakai, etc).
  3. Read the information about selecting a good password. For further information, review our Use secure passwords Web page or try out your idea for a new password using our Password checker. Some important reminders:
    • You must choose a password that is very different from your previous, compromised password. For example, if your compromised password was "S@lly1989!", do not use a password based on "Sally" or "1989."
    • The password you choose should be unique. Do not reuse any of the passwords from your other accounts (e.g., Facebook, online merchants, online banking).
  4. Type your proposed new password in the New password: text box. Re-type your proposed new password in the next text box. Then click Submit.
  5. If your password is too short, doesn't meet the character requirements explained on the password page, or is based too closely on a dictionary word, you'll see an error message like this one:
The new password you have chosen was rejected because it is based on a dictionary word. Please choose another password.
Try a stronger password in the two text boxes, then click Submit again.
  6. Once your new password has been accepted, you should be able to use your UDelNet ID and new password to log in to most UD services immediately.
  7. Don't forget to Log out from the Network page.
