Adding devices to the UD Wi-Fi network

  • We strive to support devices like AppleTV, Chromecast devices, Amazon Echos, AirPrint printers, and the like to the best of our ability with our enterprise wireless vendor. However, support for updated devices, new devices, and changed devices may be unavailable or delayed on the University's Wi-Fi networks.
  • Unpatched devices can pose a danger to other devices on a network. Browserless devices often don't get software updates like a laptop, phone, or tablet would. Therefore, devices on UD Devices are not permitted direct access to University networks.
  • You will need to complete the first steps on a computer, cell phone or tablet -- an internet device with a browser; complete the final step on the device you are registering.

  1. In a web browser, go to Clearpass and log in with your UD credentials. Your username is your UDelnet ID (no "@udel.edu").
  2. You will see the Manage Devices page. Click the Create Device link on the left side of the page.
  3. Create Device

  4. Enter an appropriate, descriptive device name, like "ABC_Redding_Printer" for a printer in room ABC of Redding Hall. Using a descriptive device name will make it easy for IT to find your device if you request help with it.
  5. Device Registration

  6. The following steps differ according to the device you are using. If you are registering a shareable device, like a wireless printer or an Airplay device, click on the set of steps nested under "Shared device" below. If you are registering a device that will not be shared, like game consoles and televisions, click on the steps for "Unshared device."
    • Connecting a Shared Device

      1. Enter the MAC Address for your device. This page contains instructions on how to find the MAC address for your device. For example, the MAC address of a printer may be found by printng a test page or looking for a label attached to the printer or its box. If your device is not described, refer to your manufacturer's instructions.
      2. Device Registration

      3. If you would like to share your device, check the box next to Enable AirGroup. Depending on your role (student, faculty/staff), you may see different fields.
        • Shared With: In this field, enter the full email addresses of any members of the UD community with whom you'd like to share your device (ex: friend@udel.edu). Note that if you choose Enable AirGroup and do not specify any users, the device will be shared with everyone.
        • Shared Locations: This field may be visible only to faculty and staff. Click the box; a pop-up menu will appear listing the different building codes (this may take several seconds). The codes corresponding to each location can be found here; clicking on a building will show its code in parentheses after its name. Choose a building code to share that device with anyone in the corresponding location. The codes with the push-pin icon at the bottom of the list should only be used by advanced personnel.

      2. Device Registration

      3. If you are not sharing your device, do not check the box next to Enable AirGroup. If you would like to share your device, see the Shared Device instructions in the above panel.
