Graduate Catalog 1993-1994
College of Engineering
Department of Electrical Engineering
Requirements for the Degrees

The master's degree requires 30 credits of graduate study and a
master's thesis. Of the 30 credits, 24 must be graduate course
credits, and 6 credits are for supervised master's thesis research.
The course program must be approved by the departmental graduate
committee and must include a concentration in one of the areas of
departmental specialization. No more than 9 credits may be transferred
from other institutions or taken prior to admission to the degree
program.
Students pursuing the Ph.D. degree must complete at least the
course requirements for the master's degree or have completed a
master's degree. Ph.D. students are expected to take graduate courses
related to their program each term they are enrolled as graduate
students. There are three examinations in the Ph.D. program: a
qualifying examination that tests the student in basic electrical
engineering, a pre-thesis examination that tests the student in the
chosen speciality and reviews the dissertation plans and progress to
date on thesis research, and a final oral examination. Ph.D. students
must prepare a dissertation on original, publishable research and one
or more papers relating to this research.
Each student works with an adviser in the intended area of
concentration. When the student begins the research program, the
faculty supervisor becomes the adviser. Ph.D. students select a
committee of four faculty including one from outside the departments,
chaired by their research adviser.
