Article 9

At the end of the Second World War, war was a way of imperialism. Initiating war was more about taking control of people and land, a means of power to improve their economic status. Article 9 of the Japanese constitution does not coincide with how people thought at that time in world history. Article 9 portrays how people currently think today and not how they did after the Second World War. Back then Japan employed armed conflict as a self-defense mechanism.

However, after WWII the approach of war and the mindset that goes along with it changed drastically. War was no longer about power it was more a defensive reaction to another country’s action or wrongdoing (ethnic cleansing, torture, and terrorism).

Article 9 of the Japanese constitution was written to prevent imperialism in Japan.  Japan should maintain forces and weapons to be used in self-defense when being attacked by another nation.
