The new name takes advantage of the reputation and history of CMS while also clearly highlighting the change that will occur as the Department of Geology joins the College. The decision to use the word ‘Earth’ instead of ‘Geology’ reflects the fact that ‘Earth’ is replacing the word ‘Geology’ in academic units around the country. This is because Geology is traditionally associated with mining and petroleum exploration. The use of the word ‘Earth’ in the title is meant to convey the Earth System. It is not meant to include ‘soil’. Many of the programs we examined had separate departments that housed soil science. Thus, there is ample precedent for such a name in programs of similar stature where other programs are clustered with marine studies.
