ACADEMIC
PROGRAM APPROVAL
CHECKLIST
This form is a routing document for
the approval of new and revised academic programs. Page 2 will serve as an attachment to the
Faculty Senate agenda. Proposing
department should complete form, attach as a cover page and forward to the
college dean. Documentation should include copy of curriculum as it is to
appear in the Undergraduate and Graduate Catalog. Proposals must arrive to the
Undergraduate/Graduate Committee by November in order to reach the Faculty Senate
by March 1. Proposals received after
this date cannot be implemented the following year nor included in the catalog
for that year.

a. Rationale for creation, revision, or deletion:
1) The proposed conversion of
Figure Skating Science from a concentration within the major to a minor enables
converting several courses now listed as Concentration Requirements for
Biomechanics and Exercise Physiology to Major requirements. These include BISC
276 or BISC 306, HESC 310, and HESC 400.
2) Add HESC 205, Freshman
Seminar in Exercise Science to the major requirements in keeping with the new
General Education requirements.
3) Delete HESC 210, Safety,
First Aid, and Emergency Care, as a required course, because the content of
this course is not directly related to the major and is not needed by all
students in the major.
4) Replace HESC 350, Basic
Concepts in Kinesiology, with HESC 375, Neuromechanical
Basis of Human Movements, as a major requirement. HESC 375 was developed last
year as a course that better bridges the gap than HESC 350 between the required
courses in anatomy and biomechanics for students in this major.
5) Convert STAT 200 from a
concentration requirement for Biomechanics and for Exercise Physiology to a
major requirement. (This course was not a major requirement previously, only
because it was not required of the Figure Skating Science concentration.)
