ACADEMIC
PROGRAM APPROVAL
CHECKLIST
This form is a routing document for the approval of new and
revised academic programs. Page 2 will
serve as an attachment to the Faculty Senate agenda. Proposing department should complete form,
attach as a cover page and forward to the college dean. Documentation should
include copy of curriculum as it is to appear in the Undergraduate and Graduate
Catalog. Proposals must arrive to the
Undergraduate/Graduate Committee by November in order to reach the Faculty Senate
by March 1. Proposals received after
this date cannot be implemented the following year nor included in the catalog
for that year.

a. Rationale for creation, revision, or
deletion:
1. HESC214
is being deleted as a major requirement for the Exercise Science major and
replaced with 3-credits of electives. Faculty and students in this major
believe that this course content is no longer necessary for the major.
2.
HESC220,
Anatomy and Physiology, is being deleted as a major requirement for the
Exercise Science major. There are three concentrations within Exercise
Science—Biomechanics, Exercise Physiology, and Figure Skating Science. For the
Biomechanics and Exercise Physiology concentrations within the major, a
currently proposed course, HESC310, Pre-Clinical Anatomy and Physiology, will
become a concentration requirement, replacing HESC220. For the Figure Skating
Science Concentration within the major, HESC 220 will become a concentration
requirement, rather than a major requirement. HESC310 has been designed
specifically to provide more advanced anatomy and physiology content with a
laboratory component for the Biomechanics and Exercise Physiology concentrations.
3.
The
Breadth Requirement of a second writing course outside of the department is
being eliminated for the Exercise Science major. It has been difficult for
students to gain enrollment in such a course due to the limited number of
courses offered. Students in the Exercise Science major are required to take
HESC 400, Research Methods, which requires an extensive paper with several rewrites.
4.
There
is also a revision in the organization of the Breadth Requirements for the
major to eliminate confusion with the Breadth Requirements in the
