ACADEMIC PROGRAM APPROVAL
CHECKLIST
This form is a routing document for the approval of
new and revised academic programs. Page
2 will serve as an attachment to the Faculty Senate agenda. Proposing department should complete form,
attach as a cover page and forward to the college dean. Documentation should
include copy of curriculum as it is to appear in the Undergraduate and Graduate
Catalog. Proposals must arrive to the
Undergraduate/Graduate Committee by November in order to reach the Faculty Senate
by March 1. Proposals received after
this date cannot be implemented the following year nor included in the catalog
for that year.

a. Rationale for creation, revision, or deletion:
Rationale for revisions to Biomechanics and Exercise Physiology concentrations: Our current master’s degree requirements stipulate that students take courses in research methods and statistics (and in the case of exercise physiology, HESC 800), and that all remaining coursework is decided between the student and their advisor. With the expanding number of courses offered in each concentration area, especially in biomechanics, plans of study are becoming increasingly diverse, and students graduating with the same degree have increasingly varied coursework. We are finding it desirable that students successfully completing these programs have adequate exposure to specific core topics within their concentration. Consequently, the proposed curricula still provide some degree of flexibility in advisement while insuring that all students in the program enroll in coursework related to specific topics pertinent to each concentration area.
Rationale for creating a concentration in Motor Control: Motor control is a concentration area that our department graduate studies committee has been trying to implement for more than a decade. In the past, our resources in terms of faculty and facilities were too limited to allow this to occur. Through the separation between our former college and athletics, we have been able to convert some of the old faculty lines into new areas of development. In the past two years, we have hired three faculty (two assistant professors and one associate professor) in the area of motor control. Their expertise, along with the fact that motor control and biomechanics share common ground in terms of instrumentation and research methodologies, make this an opportune time to implement this concentration.
b. Summary of program:
Revisions to Biomechanics and Exercise Physiology concentrations: The proposed requirements for each concentration are designed to delimit the choices for coursework to a specific set of core courses. Whereas the students currently select courses from a recommended list, students in the proposed curricula will be required to choose a minimum number of courses from a specified list. This change will limit the widening diversity between programs of study, and will insure that all successful graduates share a common academic core.
Proposed concentration in Motor Control: The proposed concentration in motor control will require 15-18 credit hours of coursework within the Exercise Science major, including 9 hours of coursework in the motor control concentration area (HESC 651, 807, and 657 or 808). In addition, 6-9 credits of coursework will be selected from a specified list of cognate courses. Finally, all students in the motor control concentration will complete a thesis. The total number of credit hours required is 30.
