This form is a routing document for the
approval of new and revised academic programs. Page 1 will serve as an
attachment to the Faculty Senate agenda. Proposing department should complete
form, attach as a cover page and forward to the college deans. Documentation
should include copy of curriculum as it is to appear in the Undergraduate and

4. Rationale for creation, revision,
or description:
Require one additional core course for Ph.D. M.S.E degree in order to
add a needed competency in polymer science.
Through various inputs from the industries, students graduating from the
Materials Science and Engineering Department, and surveys it was determined
that in order to have a well rounded off education which covers all the basic
facets of Materials Science, all students should have competencies in both hard
and soft materials. The addition of MSEG
630 as a required course will provide that competency for all the students regardless
of what their eventual field of research would be.
5. Summary of proposed program:
A course on polymers, MSEG 630 Introduction to Science and Engineering of Polymer Systems, is being added as a required course. The addition of this course as a required course does not change the total number of required credit hours to receive a MMSE or a MSE Ph D degree.
The revised number of required courses, with the addition MSEG 630 Introduction to Science and Engineering of Polymer Systems, will be 5, as listed below:
MSEG 803 Equilibria in Materials Systems
MSEG 804 Kinetics in Materials Systems
MSEG 602 Structure of Materials
MSEG 607 Physical Properties of Materials I
MSEG 630 Introduction to the Science and Engineering of Polymer
Systems
The addition of MSEG 630 as a required course will provide the competency in Polymers Science for all the students regardless of what their eventual field of research would be.
