This AA degree will require the same lower division courses required for the BSED degree in Elementary Teacher Education.  Students seeking this AA degree must complete the first 62 credits that are required for upper division clearance. No program changes are required.

None – Although this degree requires courses from other departments, these courses are already offered for the Southern Delaware Elementary Teacher Education program students currently taking their freshman and sophomore years in Georgetown and are part of the regular course offerings on this campus.

 

Rationale:

The purpose of offering this AA degree in southern Delaware is to offer an option for students attending University at the southern Delaware campus in Georgetown who have an interest in pursuing a degree in education.  The School of Education offers a four year BSED degree in Elementary Education in southern Delaware through the Georgetown campus and the UD/Milford Professional Development School.  Students apply for the BSED degree program in southern Delaware.  However, some students do not initially qualify to be admitted to the ETE program and are assigned to the AA degree program in Liberal Arts.  Courses that they take for this degree are not compatible with the requirements for a degree in education.  Therefore, students successfully completing courses within the AA Liberal Arts degree program and wishing to apply to change majors to the ETE program would have many courses that are not accepted for a BSED degree and would need to take at least one year of additional course work prior to being ready for their junior year.  This AA degree option would allow all students interested in education to meet a goal of the University that all students in Georgetown complete a degree.  If students are successful during the freshman and sophomore years and meet the change of major requirements, they could transfer to the ETE program and complete their BS degree in four years.  If they do not meet the transfer requirements, then they would still leave the Georgetown campus having completed an AA degree.

Associate in Arts Degree

     This nonterminal degree of Associate of Arts (A.A.) is designed for students enrolled in the A.A. program in Georgetown who have an interest in the field of elementary education.  This degree may be awarded upon application; students must apply prior to completing the 62 hours required for this degree.  Information regarding admission requirements may be found in the Undergraduate Admissions section of this catalog.  Academic advisement is available in Suite 172 of the Jason Technology Center in Georgetown or by contacting the UD/Milford PDS at 302-424-6461.

 

     The required courses that follow represent the first two years of course requirements for a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Teacher Education.  Upon successful completion of these courses and passing the Praxis I exam, students wishing to complete their BSED degree may apply for admission to the UD/Milford Professional Development School located at 310 Lovers Lane, Milford, DE  19963.
