a.
Rationale
for creation, revision, or deletion:
The Ed.D. degree in Educational Leadership has two concentrations: Administration and Policy (ADPO), and Curriculum and Instruction (EICE). Both concentrations require 54 credit hours to complete degree requirements.
This proposal requests that two course substitutions be approved for the Administration and Policy concentration. There are no changes requested for the Curriculum and Instruction concentration.
Changes Requested:
(1) Add Topics in Education Policy (EDUC 811) as a core course in place of Education Finance (EDUC 888) as a core course requirement
(2) Instead of Curriculum Inquiry (EDUC 897) required in the first year, change to a choice between Curriculum Inquiry or Special Problems: Effective Communications for Education Leaders (EDUC 866)
Rationale for (1): Ed.D. students are working professionals in administrative positions in education. The majority of our current students work in postsecondary education; most of the rest are in a variety of K-12 administrative and teaching positions (with leadership responsibilities). Topics in Education Policy focuses on issues of equity in education policy and ethics in education leadership; the course covers both K-12 and postsecondary education. This course is needed far more than a course focused exclusively on K-12 education finance issues, which has limited relevance for the large majority of our students. (Education finance issues are covered in a unit in another course the Ed.D. students take.)
Rationale for (2): Both students and faculty in the Education Leadership program have expressed the need for a course focused on improving communication skills (presentation skills; improved technical writing; tailoring messages for specific constituencies and leadership purposes; public relations issues; etc) for people in and aspiring to leadership positions in education. A growing number of our students are in positions with little or no responsibility for curriculum (e.g., Coordinator of Residence Life; Director of Alumni Relations; Information Systems Manager). Therefore, the Education Leadership - Administration & Policy concentration requests that Curriculum Inquiry (EDUC 897), required in the first year of the program be changed to “optional,” with the other choice being Special Problems: Effective Communications for Education Leaders (EDUC 866).
