a. Rationale for creation, revision, or deletion:
This major currently has one
concentration (Science Education) and four specializations: social studies, mathematics education,
secondary mathematics, and curriculum design.
In this program revision, the
1.
Change the social studies specialization to the level of a
concentration. No course changes are
requested to accompany this change. This
specialization is designed for current secondary social studies teachers or for
elementary or middle school teachers who have primary teaching responsibility
in the area of social studies. It is not
designed to be a program whereby individuals can obtain initial certification
in secondary social studies. The
2.
Change the mathematics education and secondary mathematics
specializations to concentrations. These concentration changes are accompanied
by course changes, admission requirement changes, and changes in exit
requirements (Comprehensive Exam and Praxis II Exam.) The current specializations are designed for
current secondary mathematics teachers or for elementary or middle school
teachers who have primary teaching responsibility in the area of
mathematics. The proposed changes includes an option within the mathematics education
concentration that would lead to initial certification for individuals seeking
middle school mathematics certification.
The revised secondary mathematics concentration would remain as a
program designed for currently certified individuals. The Department of
Mathematics collaborated extensively with the
3. Retain the curriculum design specialization in its present form as a specialization with no changes.
4. Retain the science education concentration in its present form with no changes.
5. For all concentrations and specializations in this major, the admission application deadline will be changed from the present University default deadlines of December 1 and July 1 to a deadline of November 1 for spring semester admission and April 1 for fall semester admission.
