a. Rationale
for creation, revision, or deletion:
The creation of the major in
Information Systems is a cooperative effort between the Department of Computer
and Information Sciences and the College of Business and Economics who are
creating a complementary major in Management Information Systems. The proposed
majors combine business and Information technology and are designed to satisfy
the demand for students with a combination of technical and business
training. The design of the majors is based on feedback from industry, alumni,
and other academic institutions. The industry feedback was gathered via focus
groups throughout the summer. Comments from industry representatives repeatedly
stressed the need for graduates who had both information technology and
business expertise. No current majors
at the University provide in-depth knowledge in both areas. The Department of Computer and Information
Sciences and the College of Business and Economics are collaborating on
providing majors that address this need, with the major offered in the College
of Arts & Science oriented toward students interested in. the design of new
software systems for business and the major offered in the College of Business
& Economics oriented toward students interested in the use of information
technology in business processing. The proposed curriculum leverages many of
the strengths of both the Department of Computer and Information Sciences and
the College of Business and Economics, including an outstanding business core curriculum, unsurpassed technological
expertise, outstanding faculty, and premiere computing facilities. The attached
full description provides more detail.
b. Summary
of program:
The program m the Department
of Computer and Information Sciences will lead to a Bachelor of Science in
Information Systems. The program requires a total of 124 credit hours, as does
the existing Bachelor of Science in Computer and Information Sciences. The proposed curriculum satisfies all of the University's academic
requirements, including requiring ENGL110 and a multi-cultural, ethnic, and/or
gender related course. It also satisfies the second writing requirement of the
College of Arts & Science by including ENGL312 and ENGL410 both of which
students should take after completing
60 credits. In addition,
students in this program will gain expertise in oral communication through COMM312. The curriculum also provides breadth by requiring 6 credits
in each of Groups A, B, and C, along with a host of mathematics and science
courses.
The core curriculum of the Bachelor of Science in Information Systems consists of required courses both in computer science and in business, leading to a capstone sequence (BUBC-431-432) in the senior year. The computer science courses provide the student with expertise in programming, networks, system development, and software
engineering. The business courses provide the student with expertise in fundamental business areas such as accounting, management, marketing, and finance. The capstone sequence provides students with the opportunity to integrate their knowledge of the two disciplines by working on actual problems provided by industry and business firms. The attached full description provides more detail on the proposed major in Information Systems as well as the complementary major in Management Information Systems proposed by the College of Business and Economics and summarized on a separate Academic Program Approval Checklist.
