a. Rationale for
creation, revision, or deletion:
REVISION RATIONALES:
(SEE CATALOG COPY BELOW UNDER
SUMMARY)
Year #1:
1.
THEA 693 PRODUCTION SEMINAR delete the course from
spring of year #1. Brings the SM
curriculum in line with the TECHNICAL PRODUCTION curriculum so that all
production students take this course in the first semester of year 1 only.
2.
THEA 648 COSTUME CONSTRUCTION is moved ahead a year
from spring of year #2 to spring of year #1.
The intention is to get all of the ancillary skills classes completed
within the first 3 semesters of the cycle before production demands increase
significantly during the final 3 semesters of the cycle. Faculty who teach these skills classes are
also more easily available in the early part of the cycle when production
demands are somewhat less for them as well.
Year #2:
1.
THEA 645 REHEARSAL AND PERFORMANCE/SM remains at a
total of 6 credits for the year, but they are re-distributed to better reflect
the reality of the production demands, which begin to increase in year #2
spring semester. Therefore, the credit distribution would now be 2 credits
fall/4 credits spring instead of the equal emphasis of 3 each semester.
2.
THEA 648 COSTUME CONSTRUCTION moved to year #1
spring. See #2 above under Year #1.
3.
THEA 675 PROPERTIES PRODUCTION delete from the SM
curriculum. What SMs
need to know regarding properties can be easily addressed within the THEA 674
Scenery Production course (those props that are part of the scenery) and the
THEA 648 Costume Construction course (those props that are an accessory of the
costume). A separate course in props is
no longer needed.
4.
THEA 694 SPECIAL TOPICS IN THEATRE PRODUCTION is moved
ahead a year from fall of year #3 to fall of year #2. The rationale is the same as with THEA 648
above (see #2 under Year #1).
Year #3:
1.
THEA 636, 642, 645 credits are increased to better
reflect the reality of year #3 and its strict focus on completing the stage
management skills and hands-on stage management activity that occurs during the
heaviest production year. All skills classes have been moved (as explained
above) to earlier semesters so that the attention of the final year can be
focused almost entirely on stage managing.
2.
THEA 694 SPECIAL TOPICS IN THEATRE PRODUCTION move
the fall semester 2 credits of this course to year #2 fall in order to complete
all skills classes within the first 3 semesters of the cycle (as previously
explained above in #2 under both Year #1 & #2). The spring semester of this course is no
longer needed as one semester of the course (now moved to year #2 fall) has proved to be sufficient. Removing the course entirely from year #3
allows for the increased attention to production work that is central to the
third and final year of the program.
b. Summary of program: (FROM
CATALOG)
The stage management
curriculum is an intensive three-year conservatory training program. Students
follow an integrated curriculum in which all subjects are directly related and
in which no course is optional. Students in stage management are expected to
develop technical proficiency in professional rehearsal and performance
practices and techniques, communication skills, technical theatre skills, and
management skills. The curriculum emphasizes frequent public performance in
predominately classic plays produced in a wide variety of theatrical styles and
genres, with continual studio work on the development of skill leading to
artistry.
