This form is a routing document for the approval of
new and revised academic programs. Page
2 will serve as an attachment to the Faculty Senate agenda. Proposing department should complete form,
attach as a cover page and forward to the college dean. Documentation should
include copy of curriculum as it is to appear in the Undergraduate and Graduate
Catalog. Proposals must arrive to the
Undergraduate/Graduate Committee by November in order to reach the Faculty Senate
by March 1. Proposals received after
this date cannot be implemented the following year nor included in the catalog
for that year.

a. Rationale
for creation, revision, or deletion:
CSCC369/ENGL369, Literature and Medicine, is
currently a required 3 hour course in the curriculum towards earning the minor
in Medical Humanities. This course has been taught by an adjunct professor in
the Dept. of English who no longer is at the University of Delaware. The Dept.
of English does not anticipate hiring anyone to replace this person. No one
currently is available with the desire and/or expertise to do so. Therefore,
there is no way for the students pursuing the minor to fulfill the requirement.
I propose to delete this requirement and increase the total number of hours
required from elective courses in the minor to make up the difference in total
hours lost by eliminating the course as a requirement.
This minor actually has no real home currently. In
the historic past, it came under the auspices of the Medical Scholars program
and has remained there despite many changes related to the Medical Scholars
program and the dissolution of the Center for Science and Culture in which it
was originally housed. This program has
no budget for courses nor does it control any faculty. The current director of
Medical Scholars (Dr. Florence Schmieg) is a faculty member in the Dept. of
Biological Sciences and no course currently required for the minor is a biology
course. The composition of the students
who pursue this minor is varied. There is usually a healthy proportion, perhaps
50%, who are Biology majors or Medical Scholars pursuing the B.A. in Liberal
Studies. The remainder consists of a motley group derived from the entire
University community.
My immediate request is for the elimination of the
requirement for CSCC369/ENGL369 in this minor. It is unfair to students to have
a required course that is not likely ever to be offered in the near and perhaps
distant future. Eventually, I feel the entire minor should be re-evaluated and,
if kept, should be moved to a department that has faculty and resources to
support it.
In addition, I ask to eliminate the CSCC designation
from all other Medical Humanities minor courses, retaining the cross-listing
department’s designation. With the disappearance of the Center for Science and
Culture, the CSCC designation has no meaning.
b. Summary
of program:
This minor is a program designed to study the
humanistic aspects of medicine. An objective is to introduce the student to the
notion that medicine has as its ultimate concern, the care and welfare of human
beings. A specific goal of the program is to complement the role of science and
technology in medicine and to demonstrate the shared bonds that exist between
the sciences and humanities, as well as to delineate the methodological limits
of each of these activities. To achieve this goal, ideas from history,
philosophy, anthropology, etc. are used to explore the role of medicine in
modern society.
Upon completion of the minor, students should
understand the origin and development of medicine in modern culture; the
strengths and limitations of the way medical knowledge represents the world;
the ethics and values associated with the practice of medicine; and the
different perspectives from which to understand and evaluate the human
situation.
Current required courses include: CSCC246/PHIL246,
Philosophical Perspectives of Medicine; CSCC382/HIST382, History of Medicine;
CSCC366, Independent Study in Medical Humanities, and the CSCC369/ENGL369,
Literature and Medicine, the course that is the subject of this request. In
addition, students must complete two additional courses from this list:
CSCC233/WOMS233, Women, Biology and Medicine; CSCC241/PHIL241, Ethical and
Moral Dimensions of Health Care;
CSCC311/SOCI311, Sociology of Health Care; CSCC368/ENGL368, Literature
and Science; and CSCC444/PHIL444, Medical Ethics. We propose increasing this
requirement to three courses. We also propose elimination of the CSCC
designation and use only the cross-listed department’s designation.
