a. Rationale for
creation, revision, or deletion:
The creation of a minor in Coastal
and Marine Geoscience represents one of three
parallel actions being proposed to offer formal undergraduate curricular
opportunities in marine science at the
These proposed programs represent a
concerted effort on the part of several units to provide an opportunity for
undergraduate students to pursue studies in marine science. The
There are frequent requests made by
prospective students about opportunities in marine science, and these programs
will make these opportunities available without requiring any new resources.
b. Summary of program:
The proposed minor curriculum is modeled after the existing minor in Geology, but its focus is on courses with a coastal or marine emphasis. The required courses in this sequence are all within the Geology Department program, with the exception of MAST 482, Introduction to Ocean Sciences, and this sequence is different from the group of courses used by students electing the minor in Geology. Additional courses with ecological, coastal, or oceanographic themes can be used to supplement the 18 credit minimum required for the proposed minor.
